How to play a singing bowl

Playing a singing bowl

Sound and music are wonderful tools for relaxation and rejuvenation. It gives us a mental break and brings us to this current moment.

Singing bowls are ancient tools that have been used for at least a few thousand years. Unlike music, where the mind focuses on the lyrics and cords, the sounds and vibrations coming from the singing bowls focus on certain parts of the body (chakras) and help to resonate in these areas while creating a pathway to wellness.

Anyone new to music can enjoy the practice of playing singing bowls. After more experience using the bowls, a more advanced user can create 3 sounds from most bowls and up to 5 different sounds from certain bowls. If you are a musician, you can create a similar effect holding onto one note at a time and sustaining it for a while – consciously and mindfully. Everything in meditation is about slowing down and appreciating every moment.

Steps for Enjoying the Singing Bowl:

1) Begin by getting comfortable and taking one long breath.
2) Place the bowl on your palm or the tips of the fingers (please make sure you are not touching the outside walls of the bowl.
3) For beginners, tap the bowl with the mallet included to get the vibrations started.
4) Use the wooden side to gently run the mallet along the outside rim.
5) For more advanced users, you can try using the leather side of the mallet.
6) If you hear the rattling sound, slow down but continue to add additional pressure on the top rim of the bowl.
7) We recommend continuing to do this for 5 to 15 minutes.
8) Enjoy your calm mind and relaxed breath.

Bowl Care:

You may place your bowl on a padded cushion or soft cloth when not in use and in a secure location to prevent being dropped. You can wipe the bowl with a damp cloth and follow with a dry cloth. We do not recommend the use of any strong chemicals. Please take care not to leave water or other liquids in the bowl. Doing so may create discoloration or minor erosion since the bowls consist of metal materials.
